Grill thrill
Great service at One Ten Bar and Grill
SET in the heart of Glasgow’s classiest culinary quarter, One Ten Bar and Grill has high standards to live up to. Award-winning Italian pizzerias and celebrity chef-owned restaurants are among the throng of establishments bearing their might down on the competition at the city centre end of bustling Bath Street.
Thankfully this bar and grill, part of the smart Marks Hotel, has no problem keeping up with the neighbours on the evidence of a recent visit. My partner and I settled into a cosy booth in the dining room. There’s a traditional bar meal list, a pre-theatre option and a tantalising a la carte menu – as well as seasonal special offers.
Tempted by an old favourite, I plumped for the full-on a la carte. My reason was simple: a sumptuous sounding starter of Stornoway black pudding served on a potato cake with veal reduction and apple chutney (£5.50). Not too rich but with a deep enough flavour to cut through the sweet chutney, it was an absolute joy. I moved on to a slow braised shank of Border lamb (£13.50). This was served on a delicious spring onion mash and rosemary jus and the tender meat just fell off the bone. Hearty and delicious.
Across the table my partner was persuaded to try one of the starters from the pre-theatre menu – a tasty fried wedge of Howgate brie in sesame crumb with a cranberry and port sauce. The pre-theatre deal is a choice of two courses from the set menu for £11.95 or a choice of three course for £13.95. My better half then delved into a pan fried breast of chicken in savoury crumb which came with creamy garlic mushrooms and rocket salad. Together with a side order of mash, it proved too filling for her and my greedy fork headed across the table to help out.
Determined to make the most of the three-course option, we decided to share the homemade blueberry cheesecake with raspberry and passion fruit coulis which was a delightful end to the meal.
One Ten Bar and Grill offers everything you would want from a top restaurant – choice, quality food and, above all else, excellent service. Inspired by the name of the hotel, I would give this one top Marks.
